Celebration and Change (*Exhibited at the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City) [click for details]

These photographs, of First Nations and other indigenous ceremony and celebration, are an artistic interpretation of the festivals and ceremonies, whenever photography is possible, of many different indigenous cultures and of their art and artifacts. Contemporary manifestations of indigenous ceremony and celebration, although rooted in tradition, are constantly evolving, due to modern political trends, widespread intercommunication between different groups and other influences. Traditional practices, rich in mythology and spirituality, undergo constant reassessment to update them for a modern world, and to integrate the young into historic cultural expression. The pictures illustrate cultural similarities and diversities among nations in North America with colour, aesthetic appeal and visual impact. These photographs could ultimately be of historical importance, but are not documentation. They are powerful, individual images, which appeal to the senses and are open to an interpretation by the viewer. The images exemplify the beauty and variety of modern indigenous and First Nation cultures.
